The Great Kansas Word War.
Alex Erlewhine is a lawyer, but is spending his weekend helping build a fence at his Grandfather's farm in Mid-Western Kansas. As he works, he is heckled by 'Grandpa' from the porch, using strange, un-heard-of words. As the day progresses, Alex is drawn into the resentment of the old man, who seems to be 'more ornery' than usual.
The Great Kansas Word War brings us into a dynamic of Grandpa's war stories, Alex's hole digging, and Grandma's home cooking.
Originally a shorter story, this is a prize winning piece from an author who paints the landscape of the midwest in the most amazing flowing color.
